Introduction and Club History

Established in 1924, the club thrived in its early years. At the peak of its popularity in the 1930s it was possible to buy a Sunday excursion train ticket from Aberdeen to Lumphanan for 4s/6d. Included in this price was a round of golf and afternoon tea at the hotel! But membership declined after the Second World War and with the closure of the Royal Deeside Railway, the club was disbanded in 1967. The course falling into total disrepair during the ensuing two decades.

In the late 1980's moves were made to reinstate the club but the cost of rebuilding the 9-hole course was prohibitive for Lumphanan's small community. Nevertheless, Lumphanan wanted its golf club back and a lack of funds was not going to stand in the way! Local heroes emerged, who, through sheer hard work and determination, carved a new course from the heath-land. It took several years and the help and support of many in the local community. All of the equipment was borrowed and much of the material donated. Many benefactors came forward, some anonymously. The club finally reopened in 1994 and since then has built a clubhouse and become a flourishing part of the local community. In 1999 work started on further major course improvements and in 2000 Colin Wood, president of the Scottish Golf Union, officially opened the golfing gem we see today. We very much hope you enjoy your golf at Lumphanan and come back to visit us again! We also welcome your comments and tales of golfing experiences on our course. Please feel free to email us.
